Double Whammy: Surgery & Covid-19

At times, measured steps are important to achieve. Due to a broken thumb and torn ligament surgery in July followed by contracting COVID-19 in late August, driver Kaylen Frederick missed seven races (race three at Red Bull Ring, three races at Hungaroring, and three races at Spa). Pilot ONE Racing and Kaylen Frederick entered the three FIA F3 races of Round 6 at Zandvoort with defined goals.

Goal 1: Following surgery recovery and therapy, use the races to re-develop hand and grip strength.

Goal 2: Recover from COVID-19 – Rebuild physical strength and conditioning.

As the most demanding physical track on the FIA F3 schedule, Zandvoort was well suited to rebuild strengths. Kaylen checked the goal boxes above with resolve and determination at race pace.

Qualifying | September 3^rd: 26^th

Following a practice session in which Kaylen Frederick finished 10^th fastest, qualifying objectives failed to materialize. Qualifying 26th, Kaylen struggled with understeer. However, driver hand grip and strength seemed capable of enduring through the races.

The Charge:

Securing nine advances in Race 1 followed by another nine advances in Race 2, Kaylen Frederick completed the most advances in position of any driver in each race. Moving up in Race 3 from 25th to 20th, Kaylen added another 5 advances to the weekend tally. While Kaylen finished the weekend with no points, he fought the fight for an overall 23 advances over three races and validated a determined effort to comeback from injury and COVID-19.
